However, much depends on the extent to which we take as unproblematic the idea of studying science 'as it happens'. A distinction is developed between instrumental and reflexive conceptions of the ethnography of scientific practice. The former is characterized by the use of observer experiences for preconceived theoretical purposes and by the evasion of major difficulties in the production of sociological description. Reflexive ethnography retains the ability to produce 'news' about scientific work, but also opens up new ways of addressing fundamental questions about reasoning practices in general. Sources of antipathy to reflexive ethnography are outlined, notably that stemming from the selective application of epistemological relativism implicit in recent calls for a revision of epistemological attitudes to science. http://www.jstor.org/stable/284825 1982-11 nye_electrifying_1992 book Electrifying America: Social Meanings of a New Technology, 1880-1940 history technology 495 0262640309 July 1992 The MIT Press 1992-07 star_institutional_1989 article Social Studies of Science Institutional Ecology, 'Translations' and Boundary Objects: Amateurs and Professionals in Berkeley's Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, 1907-39 biology boundaries canon history objects specialities 03063127 387--420 August 19 1989 3 Scientific work is heterogeneous, requiring many different actors and viewpoints. It also requires cooperation. The two create tension between divergent viewpoints and the need for generalizable findings. We present a model of how one group of actors managed this tension. It draws on the work of amateurs, professionals, administrators and others connected to the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology at the University of California, Berkeley, during its early years. Extending the Latour-Callon model of interessement, two major activities are central for translating between viewpoints: standardization of methods, and the development of 'boundary objects'. Boundary objects are both adaptable to different viewpoints and robust enough to maintain identity across them. We distinguish four types of boundary objects: repositories, ideal types, coincident boundaries and standardized forms. http://www.jstor.org/stable/285080 1989-08 collins_rethinking_2007 book 1 Rethinking Expertise expertise recent sociology 160 0226113604 October 2007 University Of Chicago Press 2007-10 biagioli_science_1999 book 1 The Science Studies Reader anthropology gender history introduction overview philosophy sociology 608 0415918685 1999 Routledge 1999 jasanoff_handbook_2001 book Revised Handbook of Science and Technology Studies canon collection introduction overview 848 0761924981 November 2001 Sage Publications, Inc 2001-11 galison_image_1997 book Image and Logic: A Material Culture of Microphysics history philosophy recent sociology visuality 982 0226279170 October 1997 University Of Chicago Press 1997-10 bijker_of_1997 book Of Bicycles, Bakelites, and Bulbs: Toward a Theory of Sociotechnical Change history sociology technology 390 0262522276 1997 The MIT Press 1997 gieryn_cultural_1999 book Cultural Boundaries of Science boundaries credibility disciplines sociology specialities 398 0226292622, 9780226292625 1999 1999 bijker_social_1989 book The Social Construction of Technological Systems: New Directions in the Sociology and History of Technology canon history social theory sociology technology 419 0262521377 March 1989 The MIT Press 1989-03 hopwood_models:third_2004 book 1 Models: The Third Dimension of Science history models recent 464 0804739722 July 2004 Stanford University Press 2004-07 rose_politics_2006 book The Politics of Life Itself: Biomedicine, Power, and Subjectivity in the Twenty-First Century foucault medicine recent social theory 352 0691121915 October 2006 Princeton University Press 2006-10 hacking_social_2000 book The Social Construction of What? The divergent views of the two sides are examined by means of a study of the work of the major participants in the controversy: Karl Pearson (1857-1936) and George Udny Yule (1871-1951). It is argued that the theorizing and scientific judgments of the two sides embodied different 'cognitive interests': that is to say, differing goals in the development of statistical theory resulted in approaches to the measurement of association that were structured differently. These different cognitive interests arose from the different problem situations of statisticians whose primary commitment was to eugenics research and those who lacked any such strong specific commitment. It is suggested that eugenics embodied the social interests of a specific sector of British society, and not those of other sectors. Thus differing social interests are seen as entering indirectly, through the 'mediation' of eugenics, into this episode in development of statistical theory in Britain. http://www.jstor.org/stable/284856 1978-02 wynne_maysheep_1996 article Risk, Environment and Modernity: Towards a New Ecology May the sheep safely graze? These units have thus achieved the status of sociologically constructed concepts. Disciplines, on the contrary, have been relatively ignored and their conceptualization has, for the most part, remained at the level of common sense. In this paper, an attempt is made, with the aid of the quite particular case of chronobiology, to confront the problem of disciplines, starting within the theoretical framework of Bourdieu's 'scientific field'. In this light, the conquest of the disciplinary form appears as a kind of struggle in the 'field'. The derivative institutional frontiers can then be understood as the consequence of the reification of what one may call the 'disciplinary stake', which corresponds to an attempt to exercise a professional mode of control in a particular domain of knowledge. The 'disciplinary stake' is further distinguished from other stakes or goals which arise within the environment of the already constituted discipline. http://www.jstor.org/stable/284795 1983-08 gieryn_relativist/constructivist_1982 article Social Studies of Science Relativist/Constructivist Programmes in the Sociology of Science: Redundance and Retreat canon debate philosophy relativism ssk 03063127 279--297 May 12 1982 2 Two recent collections of empirical reports claim to offer a new and possibly more effective agenda for the sociology of science. These claims are challenged. The 'relativist' and 'constructivist' programmes yield findings often of historical or ethnographic interest, but rarely new when compared to earlier theoretical writings. Moreover, methodological and metatheoretical assumptions of the programmes force a retreat from the constitutive question of the sociology of science: how does the institution of science establish and maintain its 'cognitive authority'? http://www.jstor.org/stable/284765 1982-05 lynch_representation_1990 book Representation in Scientific Practice ethnomethodology history objects practice sociology visuality 365 0262620766, 9780262620765 1990 1990 mackenzie_do_2008 book Do Economists Make Markets?: On the Performativity of Economics economics recent sociology 392 0691138494 July 2008 Princeton University Press 2008-07 thompson_making_2007 book 1 Making Parents: The Ontological Choreography of Reproductive Technologies anthropology biology history reading list medicine recent technology 372 0262701197 March 2007 The MIT Press 2007-03 law_development_1973 article canon paradigms specialities 00368539 275--303 3 http://www.jstor.org/stable/284496 Science Studies The Development of Specialties in Science: The Case of X-Ray Protein Crystallography 3 July 1973 Paradigm and post-paradigm... the origins of a concern with the sub-structure of scientific research. A Critique of Quasi-Economic Models of Science economics epistemology interests sociology ssk 03063127 101--130 February 12 1982 1 Most contemporary studies of science operate with some notion of scientific specialty communities as the basic units within which science is socially and technically organized. This paper presents a critique of scientific communities as sociological constructs which appear to be largely irrelevant to scientific work. Furthermore, the paper criticizes the prevailing quasi-economic models of such collectives for what appears to be a naive internalism and functionalism compared with the realities of scientific everyday life as they concern scientists themselves. It is argued that the arenas of action within which scientific (laboratory) inquiry proceeds are transepistemic - that is, they in principle include scientists and non-scientists, and encompass arguments and concerns of a 'technical' as well as a 'non-technical' nature. The paper also argues that the transepistemic connection of research is built into scientific inquiry (and thereby into the products of research) through the decision criteria invoked in laboratory work. The paper draws upon one year of observation in a scientific laboratory in Berkeley, California, which provides the grounds and the illustrations for the theoretical arguments presented. http://www.jstor.org/stable/284886 1982-02 westfall_construction_1978 book The Construction of Modern Science: Mechanisms and Mechanics history overview revolution 171 0521292956 1978 Cambridge University Press 1978 hacking_historical_2004 book Historical Ontology foucault philosophy recent 288 0674016076 September 2004 Harvard University Press 2004-09 woolgar_interests_1981 article Social Studies of Science Interests and Explanation in the Social Study of Science anthropology interests relativism sociology ssk 03063127 365--394 August 11 1981 3 Recent applications of the 'strong programme' in the social study of science involve (i) appeals for a 'naturalistic' study of science and (ii) the invocation of 'interests' as an explanatory resource. It is argued that the notion of 'naturalism' is insufficiently clear and that attempts to 'identify' interests neglect important features of scientific practice. Studies of the content of scientific knowledge have proceeded at the expense of attention to the character of argument itself. A detailed examination of one example of the many recent case studies highlights a series of explanatory strategies used to gloss the fundamental difficulties of 'interests explanation'. It is argued that rather than unreflectively attempting to 'reveal' interests it is more appropriate to turn our attention to the management of explanatory strategies in the practice of scientific argument. http://www.jstor.org/stable/284646 1981-08 pickering_mangle_1995 book 1 The Mangle of Practice: Time, Agency, and Science ANT canon practice sociology 296 0226668037 August 1995 University Of Chicago Press 1995-08 morgan_models_1999 book Models as Mediators: Perspectives on Natural and Social Science history models philosophy 420 0521655714 November 1999 Cambridge University Press 1999-11 daston_objectivity_2007 book 1 Objectivity history recent visuality 500 1890951781 October 2007 Zone Books 2007-10 preda_turn_1999 article The Sociological Quarterly The Turn to Things: Arguments for a Sociological Theory of Things ANT objects sociology 00380253 347--366 40 1999 2 Things and artifacts are usually treated in sociological theory as marginal, irrelevant, or passive with respect to the production of social order. In contrast to that, in the past decade the sociology of knowledge and science has developed several aproaches that stress the processual character of the cognitive relationships between human actors and artifacts. In this perspective, both human actors and things appear as active entities involved in the production of social order. As knots of socially sanctioned knowledge, things shape the temporal structures, allowing for social order to be stabilized and reproduced. From the viewpoint of the cognitive relationships between human actors and things, the distribution and transfer of cognitive properties and dispositions in a network of such relationships is central with respect to these processes. Starting from a detailed examination of these arguments, this article argues that social order cannot be conceived exclusively as a web of intersubjective relationships. It discusses the methodological and conceptual implications of treating artifacts as active social entities, arguing for their general theoretical relevance with respect to the ways we conceive the constitution of society. http://www.jstor.org/stable/4121238 1999 haraway_crystals_2004 book Crystals, Fabrics, and Fields: Metaphors That Shape Embryos biology history language 242 155643474X
